Abstract

613,561. Reversing. WIENE, P. E. June 17, 1946, No. 18091. Convention date, June 16, 1945. [Class 7 (v)] In a reversible multi-cylinder engine, in which control valves put individual fuel pumps for each cylinder in communication with different cylinder injectors for each direction of rotation, provision is made for moving the control valve in another sense to prevent sticking. As shown in Fig. 10, a control valve G1 for a three-cylinder engine is turned through an angle of 90 degrees by a lever X when reversing and oscillated by an eccentric V to prevent sticking. For ahead working, fuel is fed through a recess D and passage c1 to the injector on a cylinder C1, not shown. On reversing, the fuel is fed through the recess D and a passage g2 to the control valve of cylinder C2 and at the same time fuel from the pump of cylinder C3 flows by a passage g3 and a groove F to the passage c1 leading to the injector on cylinder C1. The passages, recesses and grooves may be duplicated to balance the valve, and drainage grooves E may be provided. In a modification, the valve is moved longitudinally for reversing and oscillated to prevent sticking. Figs. 13, 17 show an arrangement in which the control valve is incorporated in the fuel pump plunger shown shaded in the development view, Fig. 17, S being the suction orifices. For running ahead, the orifices S are placed on lines 20, 20, 21 and the fuel is pumped to the injector of cylinder C1 through passages c1a during the part of the stroke when the orifices S are cut off. For reversing, the orifices S are placed on lines 22, 23, 24 and fuel is pumped through passages c2 to the plunger of the pump on cylinder c2, whereas fuel coming from the plunger of the pump on cylinder c3 is delivered through passages a3, recesses F, connected by a passage C1b to the injector of cylinder 1. In a modification, the height is reduced by staggering the recesses F, but the valve is not balanced by duplication of the passages as shown in Figs. 13 and 17. Specification 611,423 is referred to.
