Abstract

537,028. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. C.A.V., Ltd., and EVANS, F. M. Dec. 4, 1939, No. 31388. [Class 135] Relates to controlling means for aircraft internal combustion engines of the supercharged or high compression types, in which a throttle valve in the induction system is responsive to both the action of a pilot's lever and to the action of a fluid operated servomechanism controlled by an aneroid mechanism having a variable datum device subject to the action of the pilot's lever, and further in which the control member of the fuel injection pump is also movable by the pilot's lever. According to the invention such controlling means has an additional fluid operated servo-mechanism responsive to the movement of the throttle valve and adapted to act on the datum device and on the control member of the fuel injection pump independently of the pilot's lever. The construction shown has a throttle valve b which can be moved by the pilot's lever f and by a servomotor piston i controlled by a bellows p. A link 5 connected with a bell crank d has cams 4, 7, which act on the datum device of the servomechanism and on the controlling member 10 of the fuel injection pump respectively. The above subject-matter is contained in Specification 537,027. In the present invention the link connecting the lever f and bellcrank d is replaced by a toggle e which is connected by members 16, 15, to the piston 13 of a second servomotor 14. A valve 17 controls the flow of fluid pressure through pipes 24, 25, to the ends of the cylinder of this servomotor, the valve being connected by links 18, 19, 20 to the throttle valve b. The valve 17 is arranged so that the piston 13 is held in the position shown until the throttle valve moves beyond the fully open position. The pipe 24 is then opened to fluid pressure and the pipe 25 to exhaust pressure. The piston 13 thereupon moves downwardly. This movement acts through the members 15, 16, e, d, 6, and 5, to move the cams 4, 7. The cam 4 acts on the members 2, z, to control the supply of fluid pressure to the piston i to move the valve b back to the fully open position, and the cam 7 acts on the control member 10 of the fuel injection pump 11 to reduce the supply of fuel to the engine. A position of equilibrium is thus reached with the valve b in the fully open position.
