Abstract
646,404. Starting. POBJOY, E. E., [Representative of POBJOY, D. R.]. March 8, 1948, No. 7025. [Class 7(v)] In a two-stroke Diesel engine, the ex haust valve gear is adjustable to cause the valve to close earlier at starting. A cam 7a, Fig. 1, acts upon the exhaust valve stem or valve tappet 8 through a lever 6 pivoted at 9 on a crank 10 rotatable to move the lever 6 to the left to cause the valve to close earlier. The time of opening of the valve remains substantially constant as the earlier contact of the cam rise 7a with the lever 6 is compensated by an increased clearance between the lever 6 and stem 8. The lever 6 may also be moved to the rikht to cause the exhaust valve to close later, reducing the compression so that a wick carburetter 14, Fig. 5, filled with ether may be used for cold starting. A lever 12a, connected to the shaft of crank 10 at 11a, simultaneously controls the lever 6 and a throttle valve 15 in the air induction pipe 16, which is open when lever 12a holds lever 6 in the normal running or starting positions R, S. At cold starting, the lever 12a is moved to position E, closing the valve 15, so that air is drawn in through a pipe 17 past carburetter 14.
