Abstract

278,656. Junkers, H. Oct. 6, 1926, [Convention date]. Air, removing; single-acting suction-valveless pumps; regulating delivery by opening by-pa,sses and suction valves.-In a fuel pump for internalcombustion engines, air is allowed to escape from the pump chamber 3 by opening a valve 18 during the delivery stroke of the plunger 1. The air may escape to atmosphere or into the suction reservoir 15. The valve 18 may serve also as a by-pass valve for interrupting the delivery at a, variable point in the stroke of the plunger. The liquid level in the reservoir 15 is maintained constant by a float 30 controlling an inlet valve 33. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the air escapes through a passage 42 in the plunger 1 when the end 43 of the passage registers with a port 44 in the barrel 2 or with the inlet port 40. In a variation of this form, the plunger acts downwardly, the air escaping up the passage 42. In another form, the air .escapes through a passage in the wall of the pump barrel and a neck on the plunger to a port opening into the reservoir, and is carried away by a - current of fuel maintained through the top of the reservoir by an auxiliary pump.
