Abstract

279,180. Jones, F. J. S. July 26, 1926. Vacuum apparatus.-In a fuel-feed apparatus for internal - combustion engines, comprising a vacuum chamber 3 and a reserve chamber 1 feeding the carburettor, the valve 4 controlling the passage of fuel from the chamber 3 to the chamber 1 is held to its seat by a balance weight 6 so that the valve cannot open unless the level of fuel in the chamber 3 is higher than that in the chamber 1. The valve 17 controlling the suction passage 14<c> is raised to open the passage when the chamber 3 is lifted by the balance weights 10, the valve 7 controlling the admission of atmospheric pressure to the chamber 3 being at the same time closed against its seat 13. If the fuel level in the chamber 1 rises beyond a certain point, the weight of fuel in the chamber 3 overcomes the weights 10 and the chamber falls, closing the suction valve 17 and opening the atmospheric valve 7, and the apparatus ceases to function until the level in the chamber 1 falls sufficiently to allow the valve 4 to open under the head of liquid in the chamber 3. Excess of fuel in the chamber 3 siphons back to the fuel tank through a pipe 18 and connection 19, the flow being controlled by an automatic valve 22 provided with a narrow bore. Specifications 208,087; and 245,520, [Class 102 (i), Pumps &c.], are referred to.
