Abstract

480,236. Regulating. TUGWOOD, R. J. (Daimler-Benz Akt.-Ges.) Aug. 26, 1937, No. 23410. [Class 7 (vi)] Two or more charging pumps 17, 18 of an aircraft engine are driven through liquid clutches 15, 16 which are brought into action in succession by liquid from a single pump 26. A multi-way cock-valve 29 is operated by a barometric device 35 so that as the atmospheric pressure lessens on ascending, the valve 29 causes : (a) delivery through the branched passage 27 to return to a supply tank 24 by a branched byepass 33, the' clutches being then both out of action ; (b) delivery to pipe 32 only, port 31 still returning liquid to the byepass ; (c) delivery to both pipes 32, 34, the byepass being entirely closed. The pipes 32, 34 lead to the clutches 15, 16 which are thus brought into action in succession, liquid returning to the supply tank 24 by a pipe 23. The device 35 may be under the influence of the external air or the air delivered by the pump 18. A hand-operated valve may be arranged in the liquid return pipe 23.
