Abstract

540,616. Fuel injection pumps. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. April 22, 1940, No. 7244. Convention date, May 2, 1939. [Class 102 (i)] In a fuel injection pump the cylinder 7 is formed with one or more relatively small pressure relief ports 52 in constant communication with the supply passage 44 or other lowpressure chamber outside the cylinder, the ports 52 being circumferentially spaced from, and preferably diametrically opposite, inlet and byepass ports 11, 12. The ports 52 tend to balance the pressure on the two sides of the plunger 13 and reduce wear adjacent the ports 11, 12. Lubrication, and additional pressure balancing, may be effected by means of a helical groove 17 in the plunger diametrically opposite, and somewhat smaller than, the helical metering groove 16. To prevent erosion at the ports 11, 12, the pump casing 5 may be fitted with a stainless steel insert 41 which is channel-shaped in radial cross-section and formed on one side with grooves 47, 48 in communication with the fuel supply passage 44. The insert 41 may be fitted with a hardened steel plug 50 opposite the byepass port 12. The plug 50 and another plug 51 serve to vent the pump when it is in a horizontal or vertical position respectively. The end of the pressure chamber is formed by an adaptor 30 having a differential cylindrical passage containing a delivery valve 31. The latter comprises a tapered head part 38, a grooved central part 36, and an upper piston part 37 ; it is controlled by a spring 39 surrounding a tubular stop member 40. After the valve 31 has been closed, its continued downward movement in the adaptor 30 obviates any dribbling of fuel at the nozzle. Any air that accumulates in the pressure chamber is trapped in the grooves in the central part 36 when the valve 31 snaps back on to its seat. This is repeated until the air is compressed sufficiently to open valve 31 and move the part 37 out of the adaptor 30, thereby automatically preventing the pump becoming airbound.
