Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In a fuel injection pump of the type in which the plunger 10 uncovers a spill port 14 to terminate injection and in which the plunger is operated by a fluid-pressure actuated piston 18 within a cylinder 19, the flow of fluid into and from the cylinder is controlled by a pressure regulator 23 that throttles the supply when the spill port 14 opens. The regulator comprises a spring-loaded movable member 35 in a chamber 30 with flow channels' arranged as shown so that the pressure difference on the ends of the member is substantially that across the chamber 30. The member has a portion of reduced cross-section and plugs 31, 32 are provided that are adjustable so that, when the spill port is closed, the member offers little resistance to fluid-flow in tunnel 34 comprising the inlet to the actuating cylinder 19, but when the spill port is open the sudden pressure drop causes downward movement of the member against the spring thus restricting fluid-flow into the cylinder 19 and thus reducing the pressure on the piston.
