Abstract

206,005. Hughes, C. Oct. 25, 1922. Single-acting suction-valveless piston pumps; pumps combined with other types of pumps ; combined liquid and air pumps; regulating delivery by admission of air. - In a fuel pump of the kind in which the fuel is forced by the piston from one part of the cylinder to another, and broken up in the latter part and delivered to the engine, a regulated supply of air is drawn into the cylinder through a valve port 10 during the suction stroke to mix with the fuel which enters by the port 4, the mixture being forced on the down-stroke through a pipe 6 into the other end of the barrel where it is atomized and delivered during the next upstroke to the engine. Additional air may be supplied to the fuel in the upper part of the cylinder by an air-pump diaphragm 8, which is operatively connected to the fuel piston 2 and forces air through the pipe 13 to the cylinder. Part of the mixture may be forced into the air-pump through a space between the cylinder 1 and the piston-rod 3, and returned during the next compression stroke of the diaphragm through the pipe 13.
