Abstract

736,299. Fuel-injection pumps. DOXFORD & SONS, Ltd., W., PURDIE, W. H., and JACKSON, P. May 20, 1953 [Feb. 20, 1952], No. 4510/52. Class 102 (1). A fuel-injection pump for a reversible, air-less, two-stroke diesel or semi-diesel marine engine of the kind having a resiliently-loaded accumulator plunger ejecting the fuel from the pump barrel, comprises a pump plunger 50 reciprocated by an eccentric 52 keyed on an engine-driven shaft 1 and positioned and timed in relation to the engine so that it reaches the end of its pumping stroke at the same time as the piston reaches the end of its compres. sion stroke. Fuel sucked in through an inlet port 56 which coacts with a helical groove 54 on the plunger on its down. stroke, is on its upstroke partially expelled until the port 56 is covered whence the trapped fuel urges the accumulator plunger 61 upwardly against a spring 62 until a discharge port 67 is uncovered by a plunger groove 66 connected by an axial passage 65 to the pump chamber 60. The fuel is then ejected through the port 67 by the sudden downward movement of the plunger 61. The plunger 50 is rotatable by a rack and pinion 58, 59 to determine when the port 56 closes and the amount of fuel trapped in the pump chamber.
