Abstract

507,940. Fuel-injection pumps. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., and COLELL, R. F. Feb. 5, 1938, No. 3722. [Class 102 (i)] In a fuel-injection pump comprising two cylinders and pistons, each with a suction port and both pumping liquid fuel to an injection nozzle through a common non-return valve, the first or pilot cylinder K delivers its charge to the second or main cylinder C through the suction port S of the latter, from whence it passes to the non-return valve B and the nozzle, whilst the second cylinder C draws fuel from the supply chamber P through the suction port R of the first cylinder K, through such first cylinder, and thence through its own suction port S. The cylinders K, C contain pistons M, D, the heads m, E of which have the normal helical lower edges and grooves m<1>, e, the pistons being moved by cams Q, F, rollers q, d, a double-armed lever q<1> and a slide d<1>, against the action of coil springs H', H, the arrangement being such that piston M moves just before piston D. The pistons are rotated by racks N, j<2> which may be hand or governor controlled. The cylinder K may be the larger and act as the main cylinder, in which case the piston D acts as the pilot piston and is arranged to move forwards first, and the lever q<1> which operates the pilot piston may be adapted to be controlled by the cam F which operates the main piston.
