Abstract
518,819. Fuel and oil pumps. SCOTT MOTORS (SALTAIRE), Ltd., and CULL, W. July 6, 1938, No. 19973. [Class 102 (i)] In a pump of the diaphragm or bellows type used upon internal combustion engines for pumping petrol to the carburetter, the diaphragm 1 is connected to a pump plunger 4 which injects a predetermined quantity of oil into the petrol in the discharge chamber 3 at each suction stroke of the diaphragm. The delivery stroke of the diaphragm is effected by a helical spring 7, whilst the plunger 4 may be reciprocated by a solenoid or like electrical means or by a lever 5 and cam 6. The oil enters an inlet 10, provided with a spring-loaded non- return ball valve 9, and is forced along the bore 11 of the plunger 4 and injected into the chamber 3 through ports 13 which are preferably disposed tangentially. Additional agitation of the mixture may be effected by means of a vaned disc 12, and by arranging the petrol inlet at the lowest point, and the mixture outlet at the highest point, of the chamber 3. In one modificaion, the oil is supplied under pressure and controls the delivery of the diaphragm; in another the diaphragm and plunger are operated by separate and independently adjustable cams; and in a third the two strokes are controlled by varying the effective lengths of two operating levers.
