Abstract

334,007. Bellem, L. H. L., and ross, E. C. July 2, 1929. Single-acting piston pumps. - A variable discharge pump supplies liquid fuel direct, i.e., without any synchronized distributor, to the sprayers of a multicylinder internalcombustion engine. The pump, Fig. 2, is of the single plunger type and comprises an axially movable barrel 6 and a plunger 5 reciprocated by an eccentric or cam 7 mounted on shaft 8 driven by the crankshaft at a speed depending on the number of cylinders to be fed by the pump. The pump body is flexibly mounted in a chamber 4 to which the fuel supply is connected, the discharge being regulated by varying the effective stroke by controlling the instant of coupling the outlet end of the barrel 6 to the discharge orifice 10; a non-return valve 11 is mounted in the outlet. The reciprocation of the barrel or pump body is controlled by a rocker 19, push-rod 18, and axially slidable cam 13 of suitably varying contour.
