Abstract

671,706. Injection pumps. BIENAIME, R. Jan. 13, 1950 [March 29, 1949], No. 962/50. Class 102 (i) In an injection pump, particularly for internal combustion engines, one or more pistons 3 are driven from a shaft 14 with a movement that is sinusoidal or approximately sinusoidal. Each piston 3 operates in a cylinder having an inlet port 8 communicating with a space 7 containing operating liquid and upon reciprocation; oscillates a column of liquid in space 12a to reciprocate the diaphragm 2. The space 12b on the other side of the diaphragm 2 communicates, through an opening 21, controlled by a valve 20, with the inlet 17 of the liquid to be pumped and also with a delivery valve 33. The valve 20 is kept in contact with a cam 25 by a spring 24 and delivery takes place when the valve 20 is closed and the amount delivered is varied by adjusting the phase during which the valve is closed relatively to the movement of the diaphragm 2 ; the period during which the valve is closed is constant. The cams 25 are mounted on a shaft 26 which through helical gears 15, 27 drives the shaft 14, the gear 27 being adjustable axially to vary the delivery. The shaft 26 may be driven through an adjustable coupling to vary the timing of delivery. In order to eliminate air from the space 7 during filling, a spring loaded bellows 42 is provided so that during filling the bellows is collapsed by knob 46 which is released after the plug 48 in the filling orifice has been replaced.
