Abstract

1,027,787. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines; fuel-injection pumps. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. Feb. 5, 1965 [Feb 7, 1964], No. 5113/65. Headings F1A and F1F. In a rotary-piston fuel-injection engine of Wankel type, to obtain stratification of the fuel without throttling the combustion air to ensure low fuel consumption, a second injection nozzle is fitted to inject fuel into the induction passage or the admission port. In Fig. 1 (not shown), a first nozzle 15 injects fuel into the working chamber adjacent the spark-plug 14 and a second nozzle 16 transversely into the induction passage 17 to be carried along by the combustion air so that the mixture is compressed on the planetary rotation of the piston 3. Fuel to the nozzles 15, 16 is supplied by separate plungers in a fuel-injection pump 20 which is controlled by an arm 21 fixed to a shaft 23 and linkage 22. The shaft 23, inside the pump casing carries a cam-disc 24, Fig. 2 (not shown) formed with slots 27, 28 co-operable with pins 29, 30 on spring-loaded pump plunger regulating rods 25, 26, one to each plunger. On engine starting or idling, the disc 24 is positioned so that the nozzle 15 delivers a minimum constant quantity of fuel which is sufficient to permit ignition of the weak mixture which is being conditioned for combustion during compression. To increase engine power the disc 24 is rotated clockwise so that in the intermediate load range of the engine, the regulating rod 26 is adjusted to gradually increase the fuel supply through the nozzle 16 to enrich the mixture being compressed whilst the fuel supplied by the nozzle 15 remains constant. When the engine reaches its full-load range, the disc 24 is rotated further clockwise so that the fuel supplied by the nozzle 16 remains constant whilst that supplied by the nozzle 15 gradually increases.
