Abstract
787,635. Fuel injection systems; regulating. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 7, 1954 [April 16, 1953], No. 10189/54. Classes 7(3) and 7(6) [Also in Group XXVIII] 'In a fuel-injection type engine having means causing the air to swish in the cylinder, the fuel injection pump is provided with control means comprising a piston 80 adjusted by a cam 82 in response to engine operating conditions for varying the initial volume of the fuel injection system, i.e. the volume fuel between the pump plunger and injection orifice at the start of the pumping stroke, thereby varying the duration of injection. As applied to an engine in which liquid fuel is injected from a nozzle 32. Fig. 2, into the rotating air in the cylinder, in such manner that the fuel-air mixture progressively formed is swept towards a flame front established by a spark plug 44, where combustion takes place, the duration of injection is varied in accordance with engine speed and hence in accordance with the rate of swirl of the air. The duration of injection is controlled by varying the initial volume of the compression space of the fuel injection pump by means of the piston 80, Fig. 3, whose position is adjusted by cam 82 in accordance with engine speed. The duration of injection may also be varied by a nozzle 110. Fig. 4, used in conjunction with the pump of Fig. 3. In Fig. 4 the load of the valve spring of the fuel injection valve is varied with varying engine speed by means of a plunger 140 carrying the valve spring abutment and actuated by the average pressure. in the fuel delivery pipe 35 transmitted through a narrow bore pipe 144 to a chamber 142 The average pressure in the pipe 35 varies with varying engine speed and the resulting variation in the load of the valve loading spring varies the valve ' opening pressure and hence the duration of injection. In a modification, Fig. 5, the pressure in the pipe 144 acts upon a plunger 154 which adjusts a screwed stop 150 limiting the lift of the injection valve 152. The plunger 154 carries a pin 160 engaging helical slots in the end of the stop 150 whereby axial movement of the plunger causes rotation of the stop 150. In supercharged engines the duration of fuel injection is varied in accordance with the supercharging pressure in addition to engine speed. Specification 596,846 is referred to.
