Abstract
1,187,056. Regulating I. C. engines; fuel injection pumps. HOLLEY CARBURETOR CO. April 20, 1967 [July 11, 1966], No.18213/67. Headings F1A and F1B. A fuel injection pump has cylindrical plungers 42, Fig. 2, rotatable and reciprocable in fuel cylinders 50, each individually associated with a cylinder of a multi-cylinder diesel engine, each plunger having a formed chamber 54 provided with a control edge 60 inclined to the plunger axis, the intersection of the control edge 60 with a control port 52 ending the effective pumping stroke, some of the control edges having different inclinations to the remainder and a common means 66, 62 for simultaneously rotating the plungers to vary their effective strokes. Fuel pumped from chamber 50 passes via a check valve 46, conduit 44 and a check valve 56, Fig. 1, (not shown)) to the engine cylinder. To improve combustion at noload idle conditions the fuel supply to some cylinders is cut-off by forming a double-angle helix 60<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6, (not shown) on some plungers permitting the fuel pumped by the remaining plungers to maintain the required combustion conditions in the working cylinders. Rack 66 is positioned manually and also by a governor 45 for no-load idle conditions. The pump 38 has an all speed governor to maintain minimum speed and an over-speed governor to maximum speed. Helices 60 and (60<SP>1</SP>) may be shaped to give any desired performance.
