971,447. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. May 9, 1963 [May 17, 1962], No. 18460/63. Heading F1F. A mixture-compressing, fuel-injection, I.C. engine of trochoidal type comprising a biarcuate enclosing body, 1, Fig. 1, in which planetarily rotates a three-sided piston 4 controlling by its corners 5 an air admission passage 8 and an exhaust passage 7, includes on each piston flank 12 a trough 13 constituting a combustion chamber into which fuel is injected through a nozzle 11 as the trailing corner of the associated flank begins to close or closes the passage 8. In the compression phase of the engine with decreasing volume of the working chamber 16 and increased pressure therein the fuel is retained in the trough 13 to give a rich fuel mixture which when the trough arrives opposite the spark-plug 10 is readily ignited, the compressed air or weak mixture at this stage in front of the plug being pressed into the trough to create turbulence and efficient burning of the weaker mixture. The short ignition path leads, it is stated, to rapid burning and saving of fuel. The troughs 13 preferably diverge outwardly towards their bottoms for better retention of the rich mixture therein.
