Abstract

693,268. Rotary engines or pumps. FALK, W. P. Aug. 22, 1951 [Aug. 22, 1950], No. 19782/51. Class 110(ii) [Also in Group XXVIII] An engine or pump of the liquid-ring type has a rotor 303 provided with radially-sliding vanes 307 to separate the working chambers 305 from each other. The liquid for each piston may be totally enclosed by a hollow sliding piston, in place of the vanes, Fig. 1 (not shown), each chamber alternatively being opened to segmental inlet and outlet ports. The liquid, preferably, also acts as a lubricant and as a coolant. The capacity of each chamber may be varied by removing or adding liquid from or to the ring. In Fig. 6 a pump 300 includes a liquid ring 313, divided up into piston segments by sliding vanes 307 to form working chambers 305. An end cap 302b is secured to the casing by a nut 316 to allow axial displacement of the cap to compensate for wear. Fluid to be pumped passes from a chamber 309 through ports in a stationary plate 321b and is delivered through ports 308a in an end plate 321a. End plates 302a, 321a may be angularly adjusted by means of a lever 317 provided with a pin 319 which engages one of a series of holes in the casing, to regulate the quantity of fluid delivered to an outlet 312. The liquid ring is supplied from a tank 323 through a line 324 and afterwards removed through a line 325 under control of valves 328, 329, the interior of the tank being under pressure. Figs. 10. 11, show a two-stage compressor 400 in which the vanes are so spaced as to form wide and narrow chambers 405a, 405b respectively. Fluid enters the larger chambers 405a from passages 409a, 408a, is compressed and discharged to a space 410a leading to a duct 430. This communicates with further inlet ducts 409b leading to the smaller chambers 405b by way of ports 408a. The compressed fluid is discharged through ports 408b to outlet 412. Piston liquid is admitted and discharged through pipes 426, 427. Figs. 12, 13 show an internalcombustion engine 500 in which air, or fuel mixture, enters through a port 511, is compressed in chambers 505, has fuel injected through a nozzle 531 (or the mixture is fired by a plug). The gases expand and are exhausted through a port 512. Ducts 509,510 are connected to the chambers 505 by way of apertures 508<SP>1</SP>, 508<SP>11</SP> in a stationary packing disc 521a. The liquid used for the pistons, is utilised for lubrication and cooling being supplied from a tank 523, which may contain cooling apparatus. One line 534, under control of a valve 543, leads to a bearing 535b and, along the shaft splines to the other bearing 535a. A pressureequalising channel 541 interconnects diametricallyopposite minimum-radius points of the housing, and also communicates with the tank 523 by way of a safety valve 542. The liquid also exerts end pressure on the rotor from a chamber 537 to press the rotor against the disc 521a. This pressure may be regulated through valves 543, 540, manually or automatically. Combustion chambers may be arranged diametrically opposite each other for balancing purposes. Springs may be used to force the vanes outwards.
