Abstract

687,998. Rotary pumps. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 21, 1951 [April 1, 1950], No. 6728/51. Class 110(ii) A pump having sliding-vanes 66 within an adjustable stator 62, to vary the pump capacity, is provided with large inlet and outlet passages 22, 30 leading respectively to narrow ports 24, 29 the ends of which are tapered off in the form of ramps to effect a gradual build up and release of pressure as the vanes pass by. A spring 68, Fig. 4 (not shown), forces the stator 62 upwards to give the greatest eccentricity between the stator and rotor 64 for starting up purposes. A piston valve 40 has its interior 42 open to the pump discharge pressure which, at first, also communicates with chambers 70, 72 at one end of the stator, and a chamber 74 at the other end acting in the same direction as the spring 68. As the vanes pass over a ramp 96, of the outlet passage 29, fluid fills passages 29, 26 and bore 42 building up pressure against a valve spring 48. When the pump pressure exceeds that demanded, e.g. by a servo system being supplied, the valve is forced upwards to admit further fluid to the chambers 70, 72 through port 44 and a passage 34. and to release the fluid supply from the chamber 74 by cutting off a port 35, the stator 62 then moving to decrease the pump capacity. According to the position of the valve 40, pressure fluid is directed solely to chamber 74; solely to chamber 72 and 70 or, in the usual case to all chambers 72, 70, 74. A passage 76 connects chambers 70, 72 when the stator is at maximum eccentricity. A restricted passage 78 connects the discharge side of the pump with the chamber 74. The backing spring 48, on the valve, is adjustable through a nut 52. Side rings 100, 102 support the vanes. Drain passages 82, 84 discharge fluid which leaks through packing 104. An annular passage 86 communicates with passages 88, 90 to supply lubricant to the moving parts when the stator 62 is moved sufficiently to uncover the passage 90 leading to the pump delivery. The passages 88, 90 are designed to produce a lubricating pressure of about 20 lbs. per sq. inch from a pump delivery pressure of 80 1bs. per sq. inch.
