Abstract

887,583. Rotary pumps and motors. WAGNER, E. E. May 12, 1958, No. 15195/58. Class 110 (2). In a rotary pump or motor of the outwardlysliding vane and multiple abutment type having a spring- and fluid-pressure-loaded end plate or valve 10 controlling the inlet and outlet passages from the rotor 12, the said valve 10 is provided with concentric lands 27, 28 of equal areas and means for preventing the oil film between the members 10, 12 from being ruptured. The rupture preventing means comprises oil pockets in the member 10 which are interconnected by an annular channel in the end face of the member 10 and are provided with sloping bottoms forming wedge-shaped oil films. The valve is adapted to tilt in any plane and is automatically adjusted to control the clearance between the members 10, 12 in response to speed, pressure and viscosity variations, the said clearance being wedgeshaped and greatest in the low pressure half of said valve. The valve is provided with shuttle valves 41, 41a, small balancing pistons 40, 40a and long balancing pistons 39, 39a, one half of the valve being subjected to the discharge pressure of the pump whilst the other half is subjected to the inlet pressure thereof. Each inlet and outlet port is provided with a spring- loaded piston and washer assembly such as 22, 21 or 32, 31 for initially urging the valve 10 into contact with the rotor, the vanes of which are fed with pressure-fluid fed through passages 61, 62, 54, 55, 56, 57.
