Abstract

1,027,973. Reciprocating pumps; rotary pumps. A. T. HAMPTON and G. R. SOSEMAN. April 15, 1964 [April 15, 1963], No. 15689/64. Headings F1A and F1F. A multi-output pump comprises a first pump unit with radial bucket pistons 46, Fig. 1, actuated by an eccentric 54, e.g. electric motor driven, and a second pump unit comprising axial pistons 90 each hydraulically actuated by the output from corresponding pistons of the first pump unit, by-pass means being provided in the first pump unit, output line for controlled bleeding-off of the output to vary the stroke of the second pump unit pistons 90. The motor and pump portions of the pistons 90 may be of various cross-sectional areas to provide a number of different output pressures from the second pump unit. The first unit pistons 46 are supplied via a common inlet 65 and bearing 60, and deliver via passages 72 to corresponding second unit pistons 90, and via check valves 78 to a common outlet 84. The return strokes of pistons 90 are effected by a constant pressure obtained from the first pump unit output by a pressure-sensitive throttle valve 108 controlling a passage 110, spring 106 acting to close valve 108 when pumping ceases. Pistons 90 draw from a common inlet 132 via annular passage 128 and deliver to a common outlet 136. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 (not shown), inlet passage 128 is divided by lands 182, 184 and has separate inlets 131, 186 supplying groups of pistons 90, which deliver to separate outlets 135, 188, Fig. 5 (not shown). In the embodiment of Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), the first pump unit comprises a vane pump with spring-loaded vanes 202 engaging a rotary eccentric 206. Liquid enters via a common inlet 218, annular passage 216 and inlet valves 212 and is delivered to second unit pistons 94 and to a common outlet 222 via outlet valves 214 and annular passage 220. In one application, the first pump unit pumps hydraulic fluid and the second pump unit pumps paint to a sprayer, the first unit being controlled by a by-pass valve either to actuate the second unit or to actuate a paint agitator. When applied to operating an hydraulic press, the first unit acts to bring the press to its work-engaging position, and the second unit then acts to supply high pressure for the pressing operation, the by-pass valve being controlled automatically. If the delivery lines of the second pump unit are closed, the second unit pistons stop reciprocating and the first pump unit delivers all of its output to the by-pass circuit.
