Abstract
927,325. Reciprocating pumps. W. A. WHITNEY MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 15, 1962 [April 6, 1961], No. 5905/62. Class 102(1). In a pump for alternately supplying two utility points, e.g. a double acting motor for a machine tool, a cylindrical casing 23, Fig. 1, housing a reversible gear pump unit feeding a swash plate pump unit is rotatably mounted in a housing 13, the arrangement being such that reversing of the direction of rotation of the gear pump causes the casing to turn thereby aligning an outlet 53 in the end of the casing with one of two apertures 57, 58 in the housing leading to the utility points. A reversible electric motor 15 drives gear pump 25, 30 and swash plate 37 through shafts 17, 18. Movement of casing 23 is limited by a pin 72 in an arcuate slot 73. Liquid is drawn from a housing reservoir 33 via a filter 32. A spring-loaded sleeve 89 in outlet 53 provides a seal between the casing and the housing. An arrangement of check valves in the gear pump supply and delivery lines, Fig. 5, ensures unidirectional flow in either direction of rotation of the gear pump. An unloading valve 50 by passes the gear pump output to the reservoir when the required feed pressure is exceeded. The aperture 57, 58 not aligned with outlet 53 serves to return liquid from the utility points to the reservoir via a groove 87, 88. High pressure relief valves 80 are provided in the two outlet conduits. Check valves control the inlet and outlet of each cylinder of the swash plate pump unit. The assembly is readily dismantled and is portable by a handle 14.
