Abstract
1,072,378. Flexible chamber pumps. DE LAVAL TURBINE Inc. April 30, 1965 [Nov. 6, 1964], No. 18401/65. Heading F1A. In a diaphragm pump having a bellows 36 expanded by liquid under pressure supplied through port 18 and contracted by a piston 70, secured to the bellows by means of rod 44, liquid under pressure is fed to the bellows when it approaches the fully contracted condition. In the embodiment illustrated, a flange 98 on rod 44 lifts an annular valve member 96 to open passages 90 in communication with the liquid pressure source. In another embodiment, a distributing valve (148), Fig. 4 (not shown), controls the main and auxiliary supplies of liquid under pressure to a pair of bellows pumps. The valve (148) comprises a housing (150) and a motor reciprocated spool (158) and controls the supply of liquid under pressure from an inlet (152) to a pair of outlets (180, 182). When the bellows of the pumps approach their contracted and fully expanded positions the outlets (180 and 182) are connected to the inlet (152) via annular spool grooves (210, 212) and restricted spool passages (214, 215). A system for operating a pair of pumps to give a substantially constant output at a substantially constant pressure, Fig. 1 (not shown), comprises a screw type pump (2) driven by a variable speed motor which may be adjusted to vary the supply to a distributing valve (8). The valve (8) is connected to the pair of pumps (14, 16) and bellows contracting cylinders (74) are connected to one another in order that downward movement of one bellows contracting piston causes the other piston to contract the respective bellows. An accumulator (124) and a pump (P), operated by a motor M at a predetermined pressure in the line connecting the bellows contracting cylinders (74), are connected in the line to maintain the line pressure. The liquid to be fed to the bellows as they approach their fully contracted positions is supplied by the screw type pump (2) via a relief valve (138).
