Abstract

950,586. Swash plate pumps. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. May 25, 1960 [May 29, 1959], No. 18444/59. Heading F1A. A first stage centrifugal pump 15 drives the swash plate 13 of a pump 14 in which the pistons 21 have lateral spill ports 37, which progressively release fluid upon movement of a sliding collar 38 controlled by a doubleacting piston 46 working, under the control of a piston 34 in an overriding relief valve casing 32, to progressively off-load the pump 14 as the speed of the driven shaft 12 of pump 15 drops below a predetermined amount. The two sides of a portion 47 of the piston 46 housed in a casing 49, are respectively fed by the first stage delivery conduit 19 and a conduit 60 from the input side of the first stage pump 15. Upon excessive speed and output of the pump 15 the piston 34 relieves the pressure on a portion 50 of the piston 46 inserted in a chamber 51 in the casing 49, so that the piston 47 moves the collar 38 to expose the ports 37 and off-load the pump 15. In a modified unit, Fig. 2 (not shown), the swash plate pump is primed by a first stage gear pump and both are driven by an air turbine. Valves relieve pressure in the delivery conduit from the gear pump and the swash plate pump respectively.
