Abstract

[Also in Group XXIX] In a hydraulic system in which a variable delivery pump constantly supplies liquid to a circuit feeding intermittently operating hydraulic units and also supplies liquid when required to one or more additional services, each of which can be brought into operation by means of its own selector valve, means, are provided for varying the delivery of the pump in accordance with the pressure fluid requirements of the system. As shown in Fig. 1, a swash-plate pump 11 (of which only one cylinder 14 is shown) supplies liquid through a line 19 to a hydraulic system, line 19 also being connected to additional services 21, 22, 23 through branch lines controlled by selector valves 27, 28, 29. Line 19 contains a restriction 20 and has restrictions 45, 48, 49 controlled by valves 36, 37, 38 and connected in parallel with restriction 20. When selector valves 27, 28, 29 are closed, valves 36, 37, 38 are also closed, and the pump output passes through restriction 20. The pressure drop across this restriction is applied to a servo motor piston 52 which controls the position of spill control rings 18 associated with the pump cylinders. Rings 18 are moved to the left to give minimum output from the pump. Operation of a selector valve 27, 28 or 29 opens the associated valve 36, 37 or 38 and the pump discharge passes through the associated restriction in addition to restriction 20. The pressure drop thus decreases and the servo piston 52 is moved to the right to increase the pump output. In a modification, Fig. 2, a servo piston 131 controlling the output of a swash-plate pump is subject to the pressure drop across parallel connected restrictions 125, 126, 127, 128; restrictions 126, 127, 128 being disposed in lines controlled by valves 144, 145, 146, controlled in turn by selector valves 141, 142, 143, controlling the operation of the additional services. The servo piston 131 controls the position of spill control rings 119 co-operating with ports formed in the pump pistons. In addition to the unloading of the pump when none of the additional services are in operation, an over balance control valve 165 is provided which moves the servo piston to its unloading position when the pressure downstream of the restrictions is excessive.
