Abstract

735,099. Rotary pumps. NEW YORK AIR BRAKE CO. Dec. 3, 1953 [March 2, 1953], No. 33600/53. Class 110 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A variable displacement pump has a shaft 14 on which is mounted a rotor 17 having slidable radial vanes 29 which contact at their ends a sleeve 21 which is eccentric to the rotor, the eccentricity being variable according to the position of the sleeve 21 in the bore of the casing 7, which is bored coaxially with the shaft 14 to a chosen diameter and is also bored to the same diameter on a parallel axis slightly eccentric to the shaft. An adjustable stop 27 determines the maximum eccentricity of the sleeve 21 and an adjustable stop 28 determines the minimum eccentricity. A spring 25 urges the sleeve towards the stop 28 while a piston 26 urges the sleeve towards the stop 27, the chamber 24 being connected by a pipe to the delivery pipe. The casing 7 is closed at each end by plates 6, 7 and a connection plate 9. Arcuate grooves 32, 36 form the inlet and outlet ports. The bottoms of the vane slots on the suction side are connected by an arcuate groove 42 and a passage 41 to the suction passage 34. An arcuate groove 44 is similarly connected to the discharge passage 38. Grooves 33, 37 balance the axial thrust due to the suction and discharge ports respectively. Resilient packing-rings 22 seal the sleeve 21.
