Abstract
594,441. Rotary compressors. HICKS, T. L. June 25, 1945, No. 16164. [Class 110 (ii)] A compressor of the outwardly-sliding vane type is provided with a pivotable seal 40, under liquid pressure, the liquid also being supplied beneath the vanes to force them outwards. The liquid is under pressure from the compressor delivery. The vanes 14 are built up of interlocking segments, the lateral segments being forced against the side-walls of the working chamber under liquid pressure. The compressor parts may be of light metal or plastic material with the seal 40 of material which quickly responds to temperature changes. The compressor delivery port 24 leads into a chamber 18 causing oil to be forced up a pipe 43 leading to a space 41 behind a bar 42 which is thus forced downwards to cause the seal 40 to press against the periphery of the rotor 11. Various sizes of bar 42 may be inserted to vary the pressure area on the rotor. Oil is also forced up a pipe 25, past a non-return valve 28 and feeds a groove 15 and thus the bases of the vane slots. The groove may extend for less than a complete circle, being discontinued near the delivery port. The vanes are provided with oil grooves 57 in their surfaces. In a modified arrangement, oil is led from the reservoir through radial and longitudinal passages in the rotor shaft. The seal may pivot about its centre and pressure oil supplied to one side of the centre, dependent on the direction of motion of the rotor.
