Abstract
1,246,084. Rotary pumps. TOWLER HYDRAULICS Ltd. Sept. 16, 1968 [Sept.21, 1967], No.42996/67. Heading F1F. A rotary sliding vane pump of the multiple abutment kind comprising a rotor 24, Fig.6, having vanes 34 whose tips co-operate with a cam ring 32, Fig. 5 (not shown), including a cam surface having suction ramps α, delivering ramps y and maximum and minimum radii portions #, # therebetween includes means to hydraulically augment the force of springs 38 over the maximum and minimum radii portions of the cam surface. Each vane 34 which is formed with a peripheral groove 40 extending along its radial outer face and its two end faces includes a bleed bore 42, Fig. 2, or alternatively a bleed slot on its inner face which is masked by the vane slot when a vane passes over the portions of minimum radius. In operation, when the vane passes over a suction ramp both its inner and outer radial faces are connected to the suction port 21 so that the vane is in hydraulic balance and urged outwardly by the springs 38 and centrifugal force. When a vane passes over a delivery cam and is urged inwardly by the cam surface, both its inner and outer radial faces are subjected to discharge pressure, the bleed being ineffective, so that the vane is again in hydraulic balance and urged outwardly by the springs 38 and centrifugal force. In a vane passing over a maximum radius portion where there is no direct contact with either a supply or discharge port, pressure liquid enters the groove 40 through the bleed. The width of the vane, the width of the groove and the bleed are sized to that pressure acting in the inner surface of the vane exceeds that acting on the outer surface to augment spring pressure to urge the vane into sealing engagement with the cam surface with minimal force. In a vane passing over a minimum radius portion, discharge pressure is on the trailing face of the vane, and the closing of the bleed expels liquid from the vane slot it is stated the vane is in radial hydraulic balance and is maintained in contact with the cam surface by the springs and centrifugal force, so that at all times the vanes are maintained in sealing engagement with the cam surface with a minimal force to minimise wear on the vanes and cam ring.
