630,527. Rotary pumps and engines. MANLY CORPORATION. Aug. 5, 1947, No. 21198. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1939. [Class 110(ii)] The pump or engine of the outwardly-sliding vane type has a rotor 15 loosely splined to a shaft 20 so that the rotor has limited axial freedom between guide cheeks 34, 35 and also slight angular freedom relative to the shaft. Fluid, preferably oil, under pressure, is led to channels 39 to force the vanes outwards while the tips pass over the working arc 31 and delivery port 37 (in the case of a pump). The ports 38 communicate by passages 40, with the pump inlet 36 to allow the vanes to be balanced except for centrifugal force. The vane tips bear on a track ring 25 having sealing arcs 27, 31, preferably concentric with the rotor and providing slight clearances so that the rotor may move radially outwards. The intermediate parts of the ring bore may be parabolic in shape to give the vanes substantially constant acceleration and deceleration. The fluid is delivered through passages 48, 47 leading to an outlet. The splines of the rotor bore, or of the shaft, may vary in depth along their lengths. Leakage fluid from the working-chambers collects between the splines, passes between the needle bearings 24 and is discharged from a space 55 past a non- return valve leading to the pump inlet. Packing 56 is held in position by a gland 52 inside a ball bearing 23. A radial hole 59 allows sealing fluid to flow out to a chamber 35<1>. Further packing 51 is provided. Dimensions of splines and clearances and delivery pressures are given in the Specification.
