704,935. Steam engines; distributing valves. RICARDO & CO., ENGINEERS (1927), Ltd. Aug. 22, 1952 [Aug. 8, 1951 ; Aug. 29, 1951], Nos. 21100/52 and 20341/51. Classes 122 (2) and 122 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a reciprocating engine, pump or compressor having two or more parallel cylinders disposed around the axis of a main driving shaft H<SP>4</SP> and containing doubleacting piston G connected through piston rods G<SP>1</SP> with a non-rotatable wobble plate H<SP>1</SP>, each piston rod passes through a guide F which is of substantial length and makes such a close working fit with the rod that it maintains the piston substantially out of contact with its cylinder bore, and the connection beween each piston rod and the wobble plate comprises a cylindrical housing G<SP>2</SP>, rigid with the piston rod, enclosing a cylindrical rocking member G<SP>3</SP> mounted on a pin H projecting from the wobble plate. The engine comprises a pair of cylinder blocks A, A<SP>1</SP> each having a plurality of cylinders A<SP>2</SP> disposed around a rotary distributing valve K. The pistons G are connected in pairs by the piston rods G<SP>1</SP>. The wobble plate H<SP>1</SP> is journalled on bearings H<SP>2</SP> carried by a member H<SP>3</SP> on the driving shaft H<SP>4</SP>. One of the housings G<SP>4</SP> has end caps to prevent its member G<SP>3</SP> from sliding axially therein and so to prevent the wobble plate from rotating ; the other members G<SP>3</SP> are free to slide axially in their housings. In another embodiment all of the members G<SP>3</SP> are free to slide axially and rotation of the wobble plate is prevented by a pin projecting radially therefrom into a slider mounted in a longitudinal bore of the wobble plate housing B. Combined inlet and discharge ports J disposed at each of the cylinders cooperate with inlet ports K<SP>6</SP>, K<SP>7</SP> and discharge ports K<SP>4</SP>, K<SP>5</SP> in the rotary valve which in the case of a compressor is slidable axially under the action of the delivery pressure for varying the time of opening of the valve ports. Annular grooves are provided on the pistons and on the peripheries of the valves to form a seal. An annular chamber F<SP>6</SP> is provided in each of the guides F to which lubricant-laden air has access and from which lubricant can drain through passages F<SP>5</SP>. Balancing members N<SP>2</SP> counteract the effect of the wobble plate. Specifications 203,146, [Class 8 (1)], 704,902 and 704,903, [both in Group XXVIII], are referred to.
