Abstract

Compound piston pumps; pump-actuating mechanism; valves, arrangement of. - In two-stage compressors having rotary distributing - valves carried by the driving-shaft, which reciprocates the pistons by means of an oscillating or oblique member on the shaft, this driving-device is arranged in a central closed chamber, and the low and high pressure cylinders are mounted on opposite sides of the chamber, the air inlet and outlet being at opposite ends of the apparatus, an intermediate air chamber is disposed next to the central chamber forming substantially a single chamber therewith enclosing air at uniform pressure, the low-pressure valve supplying air thereto and the high-pressure valve receiving air therefrom. In the apparatus shown, a driving-shaft 2 is supported in antifriction bearings and journaled at one end in a closed chamber 4, the other end projecting for the application of power. The shaft carries an oblique crank 5 on which a sleeve member 6 can rotate, carrying rods 14 connected to cross-heads 12, which move in guides 13 and actuate the low and high pressure pistons through their rods. The crank 5 is enclosed in a chamber 7. The low and high pressure compressors are double-acting; air is admitted to the low-pressure cylinders through an inlet 15 and ports 17 controlled by a rotary sleeve valve 16, and is delivered through the same ports and a passage 18 to an intermediate chamber, which may be cooled, and from which the air is delivered through a pipe 22 and ports 21 to the high-pressure cylinders from which they are delivered by the same ports to a discharge pipe controlled by a valve 23. The ports 21 are controlled by a rotary sleeve valve 20 mounted, like the valve 16 of the low-pressure cylinders, on the driving-shaft.
