Abstract

1433440 Reciprocating compressors SUNDSTRAND CORP 30 July 1974 33527/74 Heading F1N [Also in Division F4] In a refrigeration compressor comprising an annular array of pistons 39 reciprocable in cylinders 38 by a rotary cam 42, refrigerant is admitted to an annular inlet channel 70 defined between the block 35 having the cylinders 38 and an enclosing housing 30. From the annular channel 70 the refrigerant flows through radial passages 78 and annular grooves 77 in the cylinder block 35, ports 79 in the pistons and thence from cavities within the pistons through valve controlled ports 80 into the cylinders 38. After compression within the cylinders the refrigerant is discharged through ports 90 controlled by leaf valves 91 into an outlet chamber 73 divided by a baffle 95. The baffle 95 is centrally secured by a screw 97 and overlies at its periphery the valves 91. Thus communication between the ports of the outlet chamber 73 is via the arcuate spaces between the valves 91, although the periphery of the baffle is capable of deflecting away from the block 35 to provide an increased flow area for the discharged refrigerant. The rotary cam 42 is secured to a shaft 45 coupled to an electric motor 60, the latter being disposed in a separate chamber 65 through which cool refrigerant flows from an inlet 66 to an outlet 67. Oil for lubricating the bearings 56, 57 supporting the shaft 45 is lifted from a sump 101 by an inclined bore 100 in the shaft 45. Any oil which collects in the cylinder block 35 drains through a port 108 into the inlet channel 70.
