Abstract
1,022,387. Rotary compressors. WHIRLPOOL CORPORATION. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 19, 1963], No. 30621/64. Heading F1F. A hermetically sealed rotary refrigerant compressor, Fig. 1 (not shown) comprises an outer housing 12, 13 in which is rested a member 14 forming a sump for lubricating oil 27 and defining a chamber 25 pressurized by gas discharged from the compressor cylinder 19 through a delivery passage 48 to force oil upwardly through a filter 55 and passageways in the compressor driving shaft 22. Gas to be compressed is admitted to an inlet chamber 15 defined between the housing 13 and the member 14 so that oil 30 entrained therein collects in the chamber bottom 31 and the gas passes through openings 37 to a suction chamber 24 to cool the driving motor 17 before passing through an opening 39 (Fig. 4, not shown) in a partition 18 communicating with the compressor chamber 40. The throttling action of the openings 37 causes the pressure in the chamber 15 to be greater than in the chamber 24 whereby the oil 30 flows through a bore 57, Fig. 2 (not shown) to a trough 38 in the partition 18 where it passes through a passage to lubricate the compressor.
