In an engine or compressor of the n and n+1 lobe type, the tips of the inner rotor 3 move at a slower speed than the corresponding inner surfaces of the outer rotor 1 over which the tips slide. Packing pieces may be provided on the tips and at the rotor ends. The inner rotor may surround a stationary or movable rotary valve, or, in the case of an internal-combustion engine, inlet and outlet ports may be provided in the outer rotor. The ratios of speeds of the inner and outer rotors in Figs. 3, 4 are 2: 3 and 3: 4 respectively. The working chamber is formed by piston-swept positions 2. The axes of the inner and outer rotors are displaced from one another by a distance 4.
