Abstract

186,647. Nakao, K. May 11, 1921. Combined fluid-actuated and mechanical gears.-The steam cylinder of a pumping-engine is provided with a combined fluid-actuated and mechanically-operated piston valve which is reciprocated under normal conditions by the exhaust steam to effect the admission and exhaust of main-pressure steam, and is oscillated from the piston-rod through tappet mechanism to effect the cut-off and permit expansion. The valve f is provided with end steamchambers with ports 20, 23, 24, 25. Fig. 3, a central exhaust chamber with ports 21, 22 an exterior auxiliary admission groove 26, Fig. 6, and auxiliary exhaust grooves 27 - - 30. The liner e has cylinder-connecting ports 1, 3 ports 2, 6, Figs. 2 and 4, communicating with the outlet 13, ports 4, 5 for supplying steam, and auxiliary passages 7, 8, 9, 10 connected with the valvechest ends and outlets 32, 33, Fig. 1, respectively. In operation, the grooves 7, 8 register alternately with the groove 26 supplying exhaust operative fluid, and also with exhaust grooves 27, 28 which register alternately with passages 29, 9, 33 and 30, 10, 32 respectively. Main-pressure steam is supplied through port 6 to the groove 26 for starting. The condenser pressure is from three to ten pounds below the exhaust pressure.
