Abstract

117,468. Simpson & Co., J., and Marsland, J. April 11, 1917. Combined fluidactuated and mechanical gears.-The main distribution of the steam in steam pumps is effected by the longitudinal movement of a quadrant valve, working in a liner and. which is held to its seat by fluidpressure. The movement is effected by fluidpressure supplied to and exhausted from the ends of the valve chamber by ports r, q in the valve n. registering with auxiliary steam and exhaust ports l, m in the liner d on the oscillation of the main valve which is effected by tappet mechanism in the usual way. The supply of steam through port b to the chest holds the valve to its seat. Compression and starting ports h, i controlled by hand-operated lift valves are provided. The auxiliary exhaust ports m are closed before the valve reaches the end of its stroke to cushion the valve.
