Abstract
436,165. Fluid pressure engines. BROWN, F. H., Broadmead, Sweetcroft Lane, Hillingdon, Middlesex. April 9, 1934, No. 10603. [Classes 122 (ii) and 122 (iii)] The cylinders C<1>, C<2> of the uniflow type are surrounded by a high-pressure chest H supported in a low-pressure chest L and a rotary valve V controls flow of fluid from the chest H to the cylinders whence it is exhausted to a chamber W communicating with the low-pressure chest. The valve is axially slidable for reversing purposes, is chain driven from the crank-shafts J and is supported in a tube T having ports P connected by ducts D to the ends of the cylinders. Pressure fluid passes from the highpressure chest through inlets I in the valve to the interior of a sleeve A fixed in the valve, whence it passes through ports M<1> and P to the cylinder C<1>. The port M<1> is of triangular shape and its hypotenuse coacts with an inclined side of the port P which is in the form of a parallelogram to determine the cut-off. Adjustment of the cut-off is effected by axial movement of the valve. The port 14<1> co-operates alternately with ports P in opposite sides of the tube T for supplying opposite ends of the cylinder. Release is effected through a port Q which communicates with the space between the valve and sleeve A connected to the low pressure chest. Reversing inlet and release ports N<1> and Q<1> are brought into operation by axial movement of the valve. Ports M<2>, N<2> at the opposite end of the valve control fluid flow to the cylinder C<2>. Additional relief ports may be provided in the valve to enable the pistons to be moved freely by rotation of a shaft. The tube T may be made in two parts in which case the inlet ports I may be arranged between them. Two valves may be used and placed one adjacent each end of the cylinders.
