Rotary conical valves.-In a steam or other fluid-pressure engine acting upon the uniflow principle and comprising cylinders 2<a> &c. parallel to a shaft 8 carrying a swashplate 5, the engine pistons 3 carrying rotatable thrust-rods 4 with shoes 6 bearing against the swashplate, the cylinders have different diameters and the pistons have different strokes to enable the working fluid to pass through the cylinders in succession and expand down to its end pressure. As shown, admission, distribution, and exhaust are effected by a conical valve made in two or more parts 14, 15 adjustable relatively to one another and to a spindle 30 by a set screw 31, in order to vary the times of admission and cut-off. A bush 16 for the valve is seated in a sleeve 29 concentric with the shaft 8, and is secured to a shaft 17 carrying a handle 18 by which it is adjusted for reversing. High-pressure fluid is admitted by an inlet 19 and passages 202, 201, 20 in the valve, the bush 16, and the cylinder 2<a> respectively. At the end of the stroke, the fluid passes through a cylinder port 23 to a chamber 24, from which it enters the low-pressure cylinder through a valve port 211 and ports in the bush 16 and the cylinder- The low-pressure cylinder exhausts through terminal ports to an exhaust chamber 27.
