Abstract

8797. Ketley, C. B., [McLellan, H. R.]. April 16. Revolving-cylinder type.-Four cylinders C, Figs. 3 and 4, of square or rectangular section, contain oscillating pistons G made with expansible packing. The pistons are pivotally connected to a pin H, normally fixed. One side of the cylinders is formed of a plate carrying a sleeve c, suitably packed, which embraces a cylinder F, normally fixed. The other side of the cylinders consists of a plate D, containing various steam distribution passages, formed integrally with a trunnion b secured to the driving-shaft B. The distributing-valves consist of four piston valves k, Fig. 6, arranged in casings I. Opposite valves are connected by yokes m, of the shape shown in Fig. 10. The broad part of each yoke engages an eccentric n formed integrally with the steam-chest J, Fig. 3. The pin H is secured in a boss h formed in the interior of the cylinder F. The operation of the engine is as follows :-Steam passes from the supply pipe q to the steam-chest J, and thence through suitable ports to longitudinal passages in the trunnion b; it then passes by way of radial passages in the plate D to ports o, Fig. 6, and into the valve casings. As the ports j, Fig. 6, are uncovered, steam enters the cylinder, and owing to the eccentricity of the pin H a torque is produced and the cylinders rotated. On the return stroke of each piston the steam is exhausted through the port j, whence it passes to a port, which has in the meantime been uncovered by the valve, which forms a part of a radial passage s, formed in the plate D, and flows into the space u, Fig. 3, along the cylinder F, to the exhaust pipe. The cylinder F is arranged in bearings d, e so that the position of the pin H can be altered for reversing. A hand-lever is provided for shifting the cylinder F.
