Compound engines.-In a compound engine wherein the high-pressure cylinder is reel-shaped and controls the fluid-actuated valves of both cylinders, the high-pressure cylinder has ports 2 - - 5 communicating with the auxiliary cylinders 6 - - 9 of the valve 14, 15 respectively, so that the valve 15 and low-pressure piston N are reversed just after the high-pressure piston has passed the middle of its stroke. The high pressure cylinder exhausts through passages connected to the cylinder ends and through central ports O to a receiver A beneath the low-pressure cylinder from which the steam is distributed by the valve 15 to the ends of the low-pressure cylinder.
