Abstract

Multiple-acting piston pumps; valves, arrangement &c. of.-An engine or pump comprises two or more cylinders 1, 10 and pistons 2, 11, so arranged that the piston of each cylinder acts as a valve for the other cylinder of the pair. In the single-acting form shown in Fig. 1, the inlet ports 19, 21 open into spaces 3, 12 formed between the upper ends of the pistons and central collars 4, 13, and the outlet ports 23, 25 open into spaces 5, 14 between the lower ends of the pistons and the collars. One end of each cylinder communicates with the middle ,portion of the other cylinder by passages 27, 29, so that as the collars 4, 13 reciprocate, the ends of the cylinders communicate alternately with the inlet and outlet ports. In the double-acting form shown in Fig. 2, two inlet and two outlet ports are formed in each cylinder, three collars are formed on each piston to form four spaces 3, 5, 7, 9, and passages 27, 29 are formed at each end of the cylinders. In a modification of this form, one of the intermediate ports 19, 20, 25, 26 is dispensed with in each cylinder, and only two collars are provided on the pistons.
