Abstract

Pistons acting as sole valves.-A fluid-pressure engine comprises a series of plungers or pistons 1 - - 7, arranged to reciprocate in succession transversely of a chamber 9 connected to fluid conduits 22, 23, the pistons being connected to cranks &c. In one form, the pistons work in cylinders 8, the intermediate walls 11 of which are provided with inlet and outlet ports at one or both ends of the cylinders, the ports being controlled by the pistons. The ports may taper towards the ends of the cylinders to prevent shock during closing. The ends of the plungers may be inclined as shown to close the inlet port while the outlet port is still partly open. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the chamber 9 is of rectangular cross-section and the pistons are of square section and reciprocate side by side in contact, so that separate cylinders for the pistons may be dispensed with. The pistons carry packing-plates 32 provided with lips 29 which enter recesses 30 in the chamber wall at the ends of the piston strokes. The chamber may be annular, the piston moving radially.
