Valves actuated by auxiliary pumps. - A valve-actuating device of the kind comprising a valve operating plunger actuated by liquid pressure derived from an auxiliary pump has the pump of larger capacity than the displacement of the operating plunger so that excess liquid together with any entrained air bubbles is discharged from the highest point of the system at each stroke of the valve. The Figure shows the application of the invention to an internal-combustion engine valve gear. The pump plunger d is actuated by a cam a and forces lubricating oil admitted through a pipe m connected to the pressure pipe of the lubricating system through a pipe f connected to a chamber g containing the valve actuating plunger h. Excess liquid is discharged through a valve n and is led by a pipe p to lubricating points. The difference in capacity between the two chambers may be obtained by giving a different stroke to the two plungers or they may have the same stroke and different diameters or both strokes and diameters may be different.
