228,536. Petterie, R. Esnault. Feb. 2, 1924, [Convention date]. Regulating delivery by opening suction valves.-In a hydraulic variable-speed gear consisting of a pump and motor, the speed ratio is varied by utilizing the compressibility of liquid. In one form, the pump has a constant waste space, and its output is varied by varying the power applied. In another form, the effective length of the discharge stroke of a pump piston B, Fig. 7, is automatically varied in accordance with the delivery pressure by the provision of a piston B<1> acted on by a spring C. In a further form, the suction stroke is regulated by the provision of a piston B<1> connected to a piston B<2>, Fig. 8, of smaller diameter exposed to the delivery pressure and acted on by a spring C, the suction commencing later in proportion to the increase in the delivery pressure. The springs C may be replaced by hydraulic springs, which may comprise a cylinder and movable piston with extensions, the extensions being adapted to close successively ports leading to auxiliary chambers. Another form of hydraulic spring comprises a chamber A<2>, Fig. 9, into which a member E forces plungers b<1>, b <2> &c. provided with shoulders c, d &c.
