Compound engines; tandem-cylinder engines. -A uni-flow compound engine has a doubleacting high-pressure cylinder A and one or more pairs of tandem low-pressure single-acting cylinders E, E<1>. The high-pressure admission ports C, C' are controlled by a piston valve, and the passages D', D<2> between the high- and low-pressure cylinders by the piston B. The terminal ports may be controlled by valves. The high- and low-pressure pistons B, G, G are connected to inclined cranks b, y. The cylinder connexions be crossed, the pistons G, G<2> would then be at the top of their stroke with the piston B as shown.
