Abstract
11,871. Pearn, F., and Pearn, S. June 6. Pumping-engines; valves and valve-gear; compensating-apparatus.-In a direct-acting pumping-engine in which steam is admitted gradually to the cylinder, in order to avoid shock, a main valve d, Fig. 1, is reciprocated from the piston-rod, and an auxiliary valve k moves on the back of the main slide valve and in a direction at right-angles to the motion of the latter, being operated by pistons moving in cylinders o, Fig. 2, to which steam is distributed. by the main valve by admission passages q and exhaust. passages r. The cut-off and connexion to the exhaust of the main cylinders is controlled by the valve k, the cylinder port, at the beginning of the stroke of the piston, being partly open, while the admission port in the main valve is fully open. The main admission ports a are arranged at the sides of the exhaust port b, and corresponding passages e, f are formed in the main valve as shown in plan in Fig. 4.
