VALVE-GEAR FOR PUMPING-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARMANUS LANSING PERRINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam- Actuated Valve Gear for Direct Acting Pumping-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in direct-actin g steam pumping-engines in which steam-actuated pistons are employed in conjunction with main and auxiliary slide-valves; and my improvement resides in the valve-gear whereby the steam-actuated piston is prevented from sticking in its movements within the chest, as it isliable to do by the sudden stoppage of the pump or from other causes.
By connecting the steam-actuated piston directly with the valve-gear connections in the way designed by me renders it ready to start the pump at all times.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the application of my improvement, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section taken vertically through the steam-chest, showing the ports of the auxiliary slide-valve, the chest-piston and its ports, and the connections of said valves with the main piston, the line of section being taken through the auxiliary slide-valve H. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section showing the arrangement of the lever-actuated valves and their connection piston-rod. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View transversely taken through the steam-chests of the steam-actuated piston and slide-valves. Fig. 4 shows the valveseat and its ports. Fig. 5 shows the valve-rod and the main and auxiliary valves Which it actuates, and Fig. 6 shows the valveslide D in its relation to the cylinder-ports.
The drawings represent a single-cylinder steam end that may be applied to direct-acting pumps, condensers, vacuum-pumps, and air-compressors, and the improvement resides in a new arrangement of steam-actuated valvegear, wherein the elements are so combined as to produce a positive-acting valve-gear to obtain as nearly as possible what might be termed a single-cylinder duplex gear.

ported in bearings in a frame fixed upon and projecting horizontally from the inner end of the cylinder and on which the valve-gear is mounted. Each end of this frame has a stuffing-box for the piston-rod, and in cross-section I prefer to make the top and bottom bars of the frame of I-beams, as seen in Fig. 2.
B is the steam-chest, and D is the slidevalve, which is positively controlled by the main piston to line and line of the steam-ports for the main piston, as seen in Fig. 6, and the chest for the steam-controlled piston G, I build upon the slide-valve chest. The slide-valve D is connected by the rod h and link t' to the upper end of the lever E, which is carried by a movable fulcrum-pin e, which is itself carried by a lever F, which is mounted in a boxbearing f on the frame and receives its movements from the chest-piston by the link 9, which connects the upper end of the lever F. The lever E is connected by a suitable hearing J to the main piston-rod, and this bearing has a guideway or seat j for the bearing on the lower beam of the frame. This seating of the bearing relieves the piston of its weight. This bearing also provides a sliding connection for the lever E with the piston-rod to accommodate the are described by the vibratory movements of the lever. For this purpose the lower end of the lever is pivoted to a slide L, fitted in a recess min the outer side of the box. The short end of this lever E extends above its fulcrum-pin c and connects with the slide-valve rod 2', while the lever F also conmeets with said pin below the valve-rod connection with the lever E.
H is the small auxiliary or controlling valve seated in the valve-chest at one side of the slide-valve and controlled by the slide-valve to control the ports I) b of the auxiliary valve. The movements of these valves by my arrangement I will now explain. The lever E being in the position shown at the end of a stroke of the piston has moved the main slidevalve D to the left and in line with the cylindersteam-ports, as seen in Fig. 6, by means of the link and valve-rod t' h. This valve movement is elfected by means of the lugs h h' on the valve-rod h, (seen in Fig. 5,) and which lugs are arranged to embrace the tongue on the slide-valve. A lug h on said rod stands in a direction opposite to the lugs 72.
and engages lugs on the small auxiliary valve H, which, as shown, has also been moved to the left and opened the small port I), admitting steam behind the piston G, which is thereby forced to the left. This movement of the piston carries with it the levers F and E, the latter thereby pulling the link i to the left, and carries the main slide-valve across the cylinder-ports admitting steam to the right of the main piston for the return stroke. A slight lead is given to the auxiliary valve I-I, so that the steam for driving the chestpiston is admitted and exhausted before the main piston reaches the end of the stroke.
In Fig. 4 is seen the small auxiliary exhaustport d to exhaust the steam from the piston-chest and the ports I) b, which admit steam behind the chest-piston.
The valve-gear having direct and separate connection with the slide-valve and the steamactuated piston leaves the latter free of direct connection with and operation by the slide-valve, but actuates it through the lever F, and thereby causing a direct action of the said piston on the valve-gear to operate the slide-valve Without relying on the steam itself actuating the auxiliary piston as has been heretofore done.
I claim- 1. In direct-acting pumping-engines, the combination of the main and the auxiliary slide-valve and the steam-actuated piston, with the lever F mounted on the frame, and the rod 9 connecting the upper end of said lever with the steam-actuated piston, the lever E connecting the main piston-rod, fulcrumed upon said lever F and connecting said slide-valve between the said fulcrum and the connection of the lever F with the steamactuated piston for the purpose stated.
2. In steam-actuated valve-gear and in combination with the main piston of a direct-acting pumping-engine, the steam-actuated piston, the main and the auxiliary slide-valves, the levers E and F each separately connecting the main slide-valve and the steam-actuated piston, the lever E fulcrumed on the lever 1*, the lever E having direct connection by said fulcrum with the steam-actuated piston and the main piston-rod, for thepurpose stated.
3. In steam-actuated valve-gear and in combination with the main piston of a direct-acting pumping-engine, the frame supporting the valve-gear, the bearing J 011 the main piston-rod seated on a guideway of said frame, the lever E connecting a slide L in said hearing, the lever F mounted on said frame and connected to said lever E, the steam-actuated piston connected to the upper end of said lever F and the main slide-valve connected to the lever E, above its connection with the lever F the several parts being constructed and arranged in the Way and for the purpose stated.
