Abstract

370,990. Multiple-expansion engines. AKTIEBOLAGET GÍTAVERKEN, Gothenberg, Sweden. Jan. 15, 1931, No. 34853. Convention date, Jan. 16. 1930. Divided on 370,987. [Class 122 (iii).] In a multiple-expansion. engine with high intermediate and low-pressure cylinders, the connections or receivers 7, 8 between the steam outlets of the cylinders and the steam inlets of the next cylinders, are provided with partitions 13, 14 dividing each of the connections into two chambers. Conduits 17, 18 connect the two chambers, and the exhaust steam is conveyed from one chamber, e.g. 15, to the adjacent inlet chamber of the next cylinder by means of a fan, turbo-compresser, &c. The steam may be compressed, and heated by friction or throttle means or superheaters arranged in the flue passages of the plant. Fluid is driven through the conduits 17, 18 by pumps 19, 20. operated by a turbine 10 driven by the lowpressure exhaust. The walls 13, 14 are preferably provided with openings closed by automatically-operated valves 21, 22. The pressure above atmosphere normally prevailing in the inlets keep these valves closed. At starting, or when the pumps are inoperative, and the lowpressure exhaust passes direct to the condenser 12, the valves 21, 22 open. Throttle resistances consisting of regulating valves 25 are arranged in the conduits 17, 18. The pumps may be driven from a separate source of power. Specification 370,987 is referred to.
