Abstract

392,700. Reciprocating steam-engines. AKTIEBOLAGET GOTAVERKEN, Gothenburg, Sweden. March 8, 1932, No. 6975. Convention date, Nov. 11, 1931. [Class 122 (iii).] In a multiple-expansion reciprocating steam engine wherein the exhaust steam is utilized in a low-pressure turbine or the like, as for example in Specifications 370,987 and 370,990, the steam between the high pressure cylinder 1 and the intermediate cylinder 2 is compressed in a fan or turbo compresser 13, &c., and the steam between the intermediate-pressure cylinder 2 and the low-pressure cylinder 3, or between two intermediate-pressure cylinders, is superheated in a heater 30 through which it is circulated by a pump 14. The elements 13, 14 are driven by a turbine 10 operated by the exhaust of the low-pressure cylinder 3. The two ends of the pipe 15 connected to the element 13 are connected to the opposite sides of the receiver 7 ; similarly the pipes 16 connected to element 14 are connected to the receiver 8. Valves 25 in partition 19 connect the cylinders 1, 2 directly, and may be opened manually or kept closed by springs. Throttle valves 26 are arranged in pipes 15, 16 and a valve 28 permits the low-pressure cylinder 3 to exhaust direct to the condenser. The receiver 8 may be divided into two chambers 22, 24 by a wall 20 with spring-pressed valves 25<1>. Preferably the receiver 8 is not subdivided. The pipe 16 opens into the receiver 8 adjacent the valve 6. The inlet may be arranged in the upper portion, and the outlet in the lower portion of the receiver. The valve 26 controls the steam quantity conveyed by the pump 14. The valves 25, 25<1> enable the engine to operate without increasing the output by compression and superheating. These valves may be replaced by pipes byepassing the pumps 13, 14, which may be rotary pumps or gear-driven reciprocating-pumps. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 370,987 and 370,990.
